Give up God... and I'll Date You
By Telicia Bunch

So since my friend’s husband works around
single, successful men, I'd been begging
him to set me up on a date with one of his
eligible co-workers.  One day he comes
through and tells me about a client of his
who, on paper, sounded very promising; 35,
successful, owned his own company, good
education, well traveled, ready for a relation-
ship, and attractive.  He lived lived halfway
around the world in China (!) but, I was told,
spends lots of time in New York. What the
hell, you can’t have everything so I gave the
green light to be fixed up on a blind date.

When I first talked to, let’s call him, ummm
… the Devil, (ha, ha, just kidding, sort of);
no, let’s call him Michael, on the
phone, he was perfectly nice but I felt like I
was just another business transaction, may-
be it was the vast transatlantic divide – he
has been working in China a long time.  Since he isn't from New York he asked me to choose the restaurant. We ended up at a newly opened tapas place in Soho.

When we both arrived around the same time, I was pleasantly surprised by how attractive he was.  The date got off to a great start, he was more relaxed and I didn’t feel like this was just another business meeting after all.

For the first 30 minutes our
date was pretty normal, the
conversation flowed easily,
the usual getting to know you
stuffy….and then the clouds
started to shift. This is how it
all started to go downhill. The
Devil…I mean…Michael asked
me how I knew the couple that
set us up.  I tell him church.
He then asked if I was religious,
I said yes, and then... I swear,
he jerked his shoulders back,
dropped his head down and
rolled it in what appeared to be
a complete circle around his
body, rivaling Linda Blair in the
movie, The Exorcist.

I said "clearly the fact that I am religious bothers you, would you like to talk about it?" He said no.  I should have accepted that answer, instead I pushed the envelope saying that we should talk about it because I didn’t want him to judge me based on some stereotype the media has about Christians in American culture and to tell you the truth, I’m no fundamentalist Bible thumper; I think I’m a pretty cool churchgoer. I work hard, I drink alcohol, I party, I can hang with the best of them… but then I go to church every Sunday.

But as soon as I said church, Michael thought this was the perfect opportunity to convince me that my beliefs were totally and completely wrong.  More
