Indian Butterfly: Designer Michelle Salins
We caught up with designer Michelle Salins earlier this year at Miami’s International Fashion week. A big Madonna fan, Salins’ describes her collection as “bold and confident and very wearable” but it is also colorful, vibrant and reflects her exotic Indian roots. Most of the collection is made of silk either in velvet, tulle, satin, organza, georgette or chiffon and includes red carpet gowns, cocktail dresses and bridal gowns. Today, many of her clients are brides but she is slowly expanding into luxury lifestyle and footwear (in fact, this season, she will be introducing her collection of silk and satin evening shoes). She also hopes to introduce her designs to national retailers including Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus.

“I love luxurious bling, so my designs contain that element. The embellishments I've incorporated include Swarovski and Czech crystals, sequins and beads, and the popular Indian hand zardosi work,” notes Salins. The collection features a variety of jewel tones including fuchsia, amethyst purple, sapphire & turquoise blue, gold and silver and is aptly called ‘The Jewel Tones of India’.  You can expect to see Michelle Salins’s trademark butterfly motif throughout the collection as well.
