Walk into Miami's Tides resort on Ocean Drive and you feel somehow that you've walked into a sultry Moroccan casbah: Curved leather sofas are adorned on either side by small round tables that look like golden drums with carved out bodies. Shag rugs, lamps with clear rock bases, mysterious masks that flank the open lobby doors and low yellow light that emulates candlelight all complete the effect. All the pieces are there, put together by hot and in-demand interior designer, Kelly Wearstler.
The Tides Lobby
Whether you're meeting friends for drinks or staying in a Tides Resort room, you won't be disappointed. Wearstler has put together a cacophony of found objects that immediately become objects of desire. Incorporating all the elements: metal, wood, water, fire and earth,Wearstler turns each of the hotel’s rooms, whether it is the lobby, indoor restaurant, or the resort’s much talked about penthouse suite, into a feast of touch and sight. Chairs look as if they have been carved out of giant leaves, coffee tables have evolved from giant, burnished tree trunks and the color beige is used often but isn't boring here; instead it is layered and reworked to look as if it is a brand new selection from Crayola.

The rooms are modern and comfortable with amenities galore. In the suite I visited, there were two large flat screen TVs in the room - one over the bed, the other two feet away in the room's sitting area. Two bathrooms - one full, one half - were filled with big, fluffy white towels and tons of Molton Brown products; shampoo, bath gel, conditioner, lotions. The full bathroom is as large as the room, with a sunken tub, separate shower and a terrace whose ocean breezes act as a natural air dryer.

At 12th Street and Ocean, the Tides Resort sits on prime beachfront property. The hotel's veranda is a delicious spot for food from their La Marea restaurant and people watching. The cast of characters who parade, and cruise, up and down the Ocean Drive runway could not have been better cast for your entertainment. You will never be bored.
